Behind the Glass
Katrina Cain Session.
Katrina Cain · If There's A Heaven
Katrina Cain wanted to make her record somewhere that felt like her songs, so we took the studio to her. We set up in a house in the Texas Hill Country outside Wimberley, with stone walls, high ceilings and a natural room sound you can't fake.
We brought in 32 channels of Rupert Neve Designs RMP-D8 preamps, networked over Dante, so we could put a microphone anywhere in the house and keep the signal clean over long runs. The stairwell became a vocal booth. The living room became the live room.
Katrina brought a band of Austin session players and we tracked live, with the whole band playing together and very few overdubs. When the players can see and hear each other, you get performances instead of parts.
I mixed the record in stereo and in Dolby Atmos. Songs from these sessions, including “Not In Love” and “No Hometown”, are on her album If There's A Heaven, out now.
