Uncle Lucius · Open Eyes, Broken Heart

Uncle Lucius - Open Eyes, Broken Heart album cover

Uncle Lucius made Open Eyes, Broken Heart in a rental house on the Blanco River in Wimberley, Texas. The band moved in, and we brought the studio to them.

The mobile rig came in on road cases: 32 channels of Rupert Neve Designs RMP-D8 preamps networked over Dante, with cable running through the house. The drums went in front of the fireplace, bass by the window, and the guitars and keys went wherever they sounded right. A cellist joined for two songs.

Most of what you hear is the band playing together in one room, the way they play on stage. That is the point of recording on location. The room, the bleed and the eye contact all end up on the record.

I recorded the album and mixed it in both stereo and Dolby Atmos. Open Eyes, Broken Heart came out on 25 September 2026.
